Sacrament of the Sick

The priest will anoint the sick person on the forehead and hands with olive oil that has been blessed. This sacrament helps the sick person fight their illness and it should ease their anxiety. The sick person may not recover from their illness; the main point is this sacrament is for them to feel that God is present with them and in their own Faith belief, it should help them feel supported and less desperate about their situation. This sacrament can be given more than once and may be given to someone going for an operation, living with an illness, or if they are old, frail, or generally unwell.

Our parish holds a Sacrament of the Sick Mass on the first Friday of each month, starting with Adoration and then Mass at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

On the week of the First Friday of each month, Fr Tony visits our parishioners who are sick and housebound. If you have a relative who is unable to come to Mass but would like to see Fr Tony each month, call the parish office to have them added to the Sick List. Your relative will likely see Fr Tony on the same day each month however, exceptional circumstances can apply if for example the parish had a funeral on a particular day in which case, it may be a different day or even the following week

The Last Rites

The last rites are given when a person is gravely ill and not expected to live any longer and consists of three main elements: the Sacrament of Penance, the Anointing of the Sick and the Eucharist. If a person is too ill to receive these three elements, the priest may say prayers and offer a blessing.
